Carnivore No one can speak for all Americans in deciding the trade-offs between equal protection of the laws, privacy, and fearless exercise of democratic freedoms. - Rob Geis Envision a future where every action you make is recorded and reviewed by unknown means — A world where a government spies on its own citizens more frequently than other nations — A government that reads everyone’s email, in order to try to thwart unpreventable actions. Does this sound like a science fiction story? Well it is not; this is a reality according to civil libertarians. Ever since the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) program, named Carnivore, was introduced to the world in 1999, civil libertarians have been up in arms claiming that Carnivore violates civil human rights. This claim and others about Carnivore are shortsighted, because there are misconceptions about Carnivore itself. Carnivore is not a vicious wolf, eating its prey (email) at will; it is a harmless puppy, which can barely open its eyes; I will go into some detail on what Carnivore is, why it causes commotion, and why it is inadequate to do any good. It is the role of any gover nment to protect its interests and its citizens. Carnivore does not live up to its expectations, but if used effectively can capture some criminals. History of biting Carnivore is a third generation on-line protection program. In â€Å"How Carnivore Works† by Jeff Tyson, he states, "While information about the first version has never been disclosed, many believe that it was actually a readily available commercial program called Etherpeek" (Tyson, 2). The second generation, Omnivore, was deployed in 1997. Information about Omnivore has not been public until recently. The third generation, DragonWare Suite, was introduced in 1999 which contains three parts, â€Å"[1] Carnivore - A Windows NT/2000-based system that captures the information. [2] Packeteer - No official information released, but presumably an application for reassembling packet into cohesive messages or Web pages. [3] Coolminer - No official information released, but presumably an application for extrapolating and analyzing data found in the messages† (Tyson, 2). In short, Carnivore is a program within the DragonWare suite that captures email packets from Internet Service Providers (ISP's) in order to prevent criminal actions that are conducted through email. According to Tyson, â€Å"The FBI plans to use Carnivore for specific reasons. Particularly, the agency will request a court order to use Carnivore when a person is suspected of: Terrorism, child pornography/exploitation, espionage, information warfare, or fraud† (Tyson, 5).

Introduction In the early 1990s, the Venture Capitalists and Banks reviewed business models of books, CDs, electrical appliance retailers which were majorly confined to brick and mortar stores and simple operations. But they would be surprised to view the business model of Amazon.com Inc, which has used the internet to gain competitive strategic advantage and personify most of innovation metaphors. This analysis of Amazon.com Inc has Porter’s five forces model, which consist of Supplier’s Power, Customer’s Power, Threat of New Entrants, Threat of Substitutes and Degree of Rivalry, respectively, being conscientiously used in respect to our chosen company, to determine whether Amazon has benefitted in terms of competitive advantage by its different-than-others business model, or has it not. The rest of this research answer is organized as follows: first we shall look at why we chose Amazon, and then we shall study the five forces given in the same progressive order as above. Th is is finalized by our conclusion, where the research answer is stated clearly. Why Amazon Being one of the largest online retail companies in the world (Forbes), Amazon.com has clearly stated its position in the dominant market analogies. Emerging in the early 1990s (the era of .com boom) the firm was one of its own kinds of innovation. The firm sells everything from books, DVDs to kitchen appliances and jewellery. The firm’s other operations are: providing content production and computing services to various firms. So, all this was basic data about the company which looks great on paper, but the quality in Amazon which led us to choose it as our company was persistence towards transforming. To survive and grow in today’s complex business world where words like stability don’t matter anymore, you need to change and transform constantly according to situation and time, which Amazon has done very nicely. First of all, it survived through the dot com bust due to it having an innovative business model with less cost formula. Then to expand, they went further than books to bring in most of easily shippable goods. Amazon came through once again to satisfy a new customer – IT community, which required new resources, and a new business model. This was in 2002. In 2007, it further innovated to launch the kindle eBook reader (which currently is a  tablet computer). This product required Amazon to be a hardware producer as well as digital media software. And the success of Kindle showed that Amazon had the ability to respond to market needs, and to transform, not just once, but time and time again, to deliver the demanded product for both customer satisfaction and growth of its business. These support our choice of choosing this company. Supplier’s power There are two major supplying fields for Amazon’s (according to the sales structure of the firm), namely; electronics and book sectors. With those suppliers related to supplying books in terms of their bargaining power have proved to be at a minimum (or limited) level ’cause of low concentration that directly adds to the firm’s value overtime. The out-coming factor to such relativity is large number of book sellers present in the market. In such manner, Amazon is readily open to select its own suppliers for books once there is a distortion of material nature of things. Other sector that the firm’s sale figures are heavily dependent upon is electronics. In such case the bargaining power for electronics suppliers is relatively high. Being more customer centric firm, it satisfies more customers and due to that reason the firm has more offering than any other industry in such field. To conclude, the above reasoning for the customer’s power to bargain and industry’s ability to attract more, we say that it fluctuates mid to high. Threat of New Entrants Majorly this relates to barrier to entry into the current segment of the market (online retailing). In such field (at eh present financial scenario) threats of new entrants are low. Beating Amazon.com is at its performance scale is a tough job for any new .com enterprise. It may take years for a new firm to get into form working in present financial world (concerning stock market fluctuations, investment hedges etc.). For any E-commerce firm to develop requires a start-up strategy and stable working environment; that is only possible when there a suitable financial induction and better approach to day-to-day problems. Strong distribution and supply network is the basic necessity for an online retail company. The manner in which big firms such as Amazon.com, eBay, Alibaba; operates, they have evolved overtime to get their goods to the end consumers. Geographic factor is better for the firm’s competitive advantage. Amazon.com withstand a better than any other firm, by operating as product and service differentiation to attain maximum locality it can. Economic recovery and a rapid reduction in unemployment (Which Hitler took credit for, even though it was inevitable since the depression was over and all other countries had the same recovery) created a huge following for the Nazi party. A combination of success and somewhat forcing people to support the Nazi party and if they didnt they would go to jail or be killed, brought the support of 90% of voters in a plebiscite. With Hitler now in absolute power, he can do whatever he pleases. Not only that, but with his strong leadership skills and his charisma, he has the rest of the country to support him. These attacks were given a name, Kristallnacht or the night of the broken glass. After this horrific night the Jewish race lost all hopes in having a regular life inside Germanys nation. The Jews were constantly being humiliated by their own government. They continued to take properties of Jews by a process they called Aryanization. While the first people that were sent to concentration camps were political dissidents (which assisted Hitler in becoming a dictator), trade unionists, and social democrats, his Army of people that he named the SA (Storm Troopers) were fighting mainly communists. However, in 1933 Hitlers SA began raiding gay bars because according to him homosexuality was on the grounds for prosecution. These homosexual males (Yes, only males) were sent to concentration camps to be treated for conversion therapy. Along with male homosexuals, african american males (most of which fight with Adolf in WWI) were sent to the camps as well. As were many other races and religions Hitler didnt find fit to live in his country. But they were there for sterilization and inhumane experiments. The majority of concentration camp inhabitants were Jews. Some went through sterilization and experiments, but they were all one way or another systematically murdered in gas chambers. These tests were disgustingly inhumane and barbaric. Shortly after WWII began, what the Germans called the T4 program was initiated. The essentially euphemistically Euthanasia program that was conducted in the camps, were tests to kill people who were physically or mentally handicapped. Hitler genuinely believed that these people were not worth their life and they didnt deserve it, he also called them worthless eaters. The Nazis pioneered the gas chambers and mass crematoria for this program. Another test done at these camps were simply to attempt to fight diseases. The Nazi scientists tried several types of antibiotics and immunization compounded to try to stop these contagious diseases and other injuries soldiers encountered when fighting. Which included diseases such as malaria, typhus, tuberculosis, typhoid fever, yellow fever, and infectious hepatitis. Later on if they survived they were given all sorts of antibiotics and sent them into mustard gas chambers to see if there was a potential solution for it. A third medical category was conducted to try to advance Nazi racial and ideological goals. The most infamous and largely documented test were of Joseph Mengele on dozens of twins and gypsies at Auschwitz, to determine how different races withstood various contagious diseases and how they reacted to them, he did this by literally injecting the virus into them and observing how they dealt with the virus, how it spread, symptoms, and how quick or if they died. Early 1942 was when these concentration or extermination camps were constructed in several locations such as Treblinka, Sobibor, and Belzec in occupied Poland.

This essay will compare the view and treatment of manic depression in the sixties, to the view and treatment now. The mental illness of manic depression, and its treatment and diagnosis, will be explained and detailed. Diagnosing manic depression has been a hard task for doctors. In the sixties, rarely were people treated, or even diagnosed for manic depression. It was not until the nineteen- seventies that Lithium, a mood stabler for manics, was introduced. Manic depression was not easily detected. Most doctors attributed the dramatic mood swings to puberty or the state of adolescence. Most commonly, the patient was told to snap out of it or given some form of an anti-depressant. Many people started to self medicate in the sixties with the various drugs that were floating around. There were medications and treatments, but none specifically geared toward manic depression. The most common medications were Thorazine, various tranquilizers, Meprobamate (Miltown), Librium, and Diazepam (Valium). The most common treatment was psychotherapy or talk therapy. If your symptoms or actions were severe, most likely you were labeled mad or insane and institutionalized. Even if you got better the stigma of once being insane haunted you when trying to lead a normal life. Since the nineties, the diagnosing of mania has become increasingly easier. CTs and MRI scans show abnormalities and changes in brain waves to aid in diagnosis. Mania is now treatable with Lithium, anti-convulsants, and therapeutic intervention. There are now support groups and other help for people. Many people are still hospitalized, but the conditions are much better. People are no longer labeled as insane. It is an issue that many people are trying to understand. There are still those who are ignorant, and the stigma of mental illness is still there. Manic depression, in most cases, is treatable and people with it can live successfully. But, we still have not erased the stigma that goes with it, as well as with many other mental illnesses or disorders. We have come a long way!
